A Message From The President: December 2005 -- Open House Success!

Club President Jim Jansen
Both Open House sessions of 11/06/05 and 11/20/05 should be considered successful in that most operations over the two days of running were relatively incident-free. One exception was the first start up on 11/06/05 in which a small electrical problem held up traffic for a short while. But thanks to all careful engineers and tower operators for excellent work in keeping the Open Houses accident-free.

In addition, I personally would like to take this opportunity to extend many thanks to all who participated and helped in the Open House. The pre-planning and extensive lead-time work plus the actual operations involved too many people and too many functions to specifically mention any one person or job since numerous individuals did multiple tasks. But figuratively speaking, the participants came together and performed as rentlessly as the Bears defensive line.

Public interest in model railroading and the Garfield Central was evident by well-attended operations on both weekends.

A subtle but encouraging observation was noted in the appearance of several GC diesels and some GC rolling stock mixed within other consists.

Imagine this concept -- one day most consists at the Open House would have GC motive power and consists filled with GC heralds while other prototypical road names would take a back seat to the railroad that they're running on.

Granted the fact that we do have attractive new GC tee shirts that were worn by most operators, it is still desirable and perhaps more appropriate that the layout's own identity be apparent at a glance by means of much more GC equipment to highlight the fact that this pike belongs to the Garfield Central Railroad and not the PRR, B&O, C&O, ATSF, or CNW. One should be able to simply look at the layout and know visually that this is the great, world-renowned GC.

Peace,

Jim Jansen
