September 2004 Work Report

September '04 has come and gone, and the following is an update on our work progress on the Garfield Central for the month.

Below, track foreman Frank Schneider expertly installs the second of two diamonds (i.e. crossings) in Summit. This view shows the trolley line curving and crossing over the freight branch right in downtown Summit. Eventually, these sections of trackage will be put underneath street pavement, thus creating a fair amount of street-running trackage in Summit.

Frank Schneider works on the second of two diamonds in Summit. Note the ingenious (?) use of the crushed Diet Pepsi can -- it now serves as a soldering iron holder

The below view shows new trackage meeting old -- namely, the new trackage in Summit now connects to existing mainline GC trackage in Summit by means of the piece of track in the foreground of the below shot. The exact line of demarcation between old and new is about 6 inches ahead of the B&M hopper car. Note that several turnouts will soon be cut in along this section of track -- for now, however, the rails run straight through into downtown Summit, uninterrupted.

New trackage connects to old at Summit West. This will soon become a busy spot on the GC!

While Summit keeps many members of the Garfield-Clarendon Model Railroad Club busy on a full-time basis, there is always work taking place elsewhere on the layout. Here, Club President Pat Reardon inspects some electrical equipment underneath Gaskill Mine, in an attempt to scope out the effort required for a dispatcher's control panel in the "upper deck" portion of the layout room.

Thousands of different wires congregate in these particular access panels.

That about wraps it up for the September 2004 work update. October '04 will give a good overview of all of the trackage to be laid in Summit, along with further tracklaying progress views.
