January 2005 Work Report

A new year is upon us, and January '05 is already in the books. We haven't reported any work progress since October, so we have a lot to cover this month.

Several projects in the electrical realm have been completed this month, each resulting in a significant improvement to the Club layout. The first is the completion of all signalling at the east end of the layout, in Clarendon Gap. A new cantilever signal bridge was installed by John Molls and Pat Reardon to govern westbound movements out of CA. The below shot shows the two mainline tracks which are now signalled. The upper-left head is a distant indicator for the crossing (in this case, against us):

There is also new and fully-operational signalling on approach into CA and the east loop of the layout, indicating if it is clear all the way through the loop and back out to Bohl Crossing. We'll feature this signalling next month.

Another project that was completed in January was the installation of a new Tortoise slow-motion turnout motor at the west end of CA. Bob Lindt and Frank Schneider combined to install and wire this turnout. The previous motor was damaged by water leaks from the ceiling in this area, and it is nice to have this turnout back in service:

Meanwhile in CA, Pat Reardon has been busy linking up the wiring of each of the layout's 6 control towers (power districts) so that our signalling can be linked seamlessly across the whole layout:

Finally, Bob Lindt led the installation of two new DCC plug-in ports on the layout, in locations that lacked any plug-ins. One of these was in CA, and the other was installed as part of a new panel at Garfield Courthouse, that will eventually also feature a Courthouse repeater panel, to aid in switching this busy location. Both ports are pictured below:

Meanwhile, the tracklaying effort in Summit continues at a somewhat reduced pace due to the recent holidays and a lack of new turnout kits. Three turnouts have now been laid, and two spurs into the wood- unloading area of the paper mill are currently being laid. We'll have pictures of the progress in Summit for next month's report. Until next time,
