April 2005 Work Report

April was a busy month on the Garfield Central!

Adjacent to the location of the new mainline signals in Williamsport featured in last month's report, John Molls and Pat Reardon completed the installation of operating grade crossing flashers and gates this month. Below, Pat is seen doing some of the wiring underneath the layout:

Below, Pat and John drill holes in the tracks for the photo-cell detectors:

John and Jack run some initial tests on the crossing protection:

Below is a closeup of one of the crossing flashers and arms, during operation:

Below is a "before" photo of the entire grade crossing, without a train...:

...and then an "after" photo of the entire grade crossing, with the crossing protection activated by an approaching train:

In this view, the red crossing light reflects off of a passing train:

In other news, a few others odds and ends have taken place on the GC during the last month. First up is a shot of the mainline signal that now protects the eastern end of the layout:

This signal stands just east of Bohl Crossing, on the downgrade approach into CA and the layout's east loop. The 3-light indication is enough to show clearance all the way into, through, and out of the east loop.

Another recent improvement in the immediate area of Bohl Crossing is a new plaque indicating that the big hill between Williamsport and Summit has been named Ferguson Hill, in the memory of Rev. Ronald J. Ferguson, a long-time friend and supporter of the Club who passed away recently. The below shot shows the plaque:

Up in Georgetown, it should be noted that the GT turntable is currently out of service and off the layout, as Pat Reardon is repairing it and indexing it in preparation for reinstallation. In the meantime, engines in the GT roundhouse stand by:

That's about it for this month!
