October-November 2005 Work Report

The most notable work taking place on the Garfield Central this fall has been new trackwork, specifically up in Summit as well as in Georgetown. First, we'll look at the new trackage up in Summit, which will serve a large paper mill. A new turnout-building jig has finally been procured, which has allowed a lot of progress in the hand-laying of turnouts in Summit. The eastern end of the branch is almost complete, except for one turnout and some spurs and trackage between turnouts. At that point, attention will shift to the helper engine terminal planned for the west end of Summit.

An overview of the paper mill trackage being laid in Summit. The two turnouts in the foreground are newly laid within the last month. This mill trackage will be completed soon. The GC mainline is to the left.

Below is a closeup of one such newly-laid turnout in Summit:

Club member Terry Hartland (aka Terry #1) makes adjustments to new trackage in Summit

As mentioned before, the end of the new branch in Summit serves a large paper mill, but first the branch passes through the forthcoming downtown area of Summit. Included in this is some street-running trackage and an intersection with a new interurban line currently being installed. Below, Pat Reardon spikes down a guard rail on a portion of the branch that will be buried in a street:

Guard rails are spiked down in Summit. The track to the right is a short storage spur; the left track swings through Summit and connects to the existing GC at "Summit West".

There is also new trackage being installed in the major division point town of Georgetown. Below, member Bob Lindt spikes down the turnout that will feed trackage into the newly-installed car shop and engine backshop at Georgetown's west end:

Also taking place is the training of new tower operators for the layout. Here is chief dispatcher Eric Glascott showing the in's and out's of the large GT control panel:

Crossing protection will soon be operable at this grade crossing in Gaskill Run

That's it for this month! We'll be back soon with a report for December.
